The efficiency gains stem from better anticipation of grid conditions and market prices, allowing upstream dams to release water strategically so downstream facilities can generate power during more economically favorable periods. As public utilities, the participating operators could potentially pass these revenue gains to consumers through reduced rates.

The study addressed a critical strategic question for Grant PUD as it evaluates participation in developing day-ahead electricity markets in the West. The collaboration demonstrated how combining the utility’s operational expertise with advanced grid modeling tools could provide actionable insights for individual utilities while generating broader information relevant to hydropower operators and grid planners across the Western Interconnection.
