Healthcare providers in Wales are highlighting significant gaps in surgical abortion access, with women increasingly required to travel to England for procedures after 18 weeks of pregnancy. Dr Ed Dorman, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, stated he regularly treats Welsh patients at a British Pregnancy Advisory Service clinic in London but expressed concern about an undetermined number of women who lack the ability to make such journeys and may be forced to continue unwanted pregnancies.
Dr Jane Dickson, representing the British Society of Abortion Care Providers in Wales, noted that surgical abortions can provide faster procedures and quicker recovery times compared to medical abortions, yet remain rarely available within Wales. She identified conscientious objection among healthcare staff as a widespread barrier, with workers able to refuse participation in abortion care on moral or religious grounds. Dickson described specific cases where women experienced significant delays or were unable to access care due to these objections and geographic constraints.
Currently, approximately 175 women from Wales travel to England annually for surgical abortion care, according to BPAS data. The charity previously provided such services at a Cardiff clinic for women between 14 and 18 weeks pregnant, but that facility has closed during relocation, forcing those beyond 18 weeks to seek care across the border. Medical abortions, involving tablet-based treatment at home, account for about 90% of pregnancy terminations in Wales, England, and Scotland, where abortion is permitted up to 24 weeks with approval from two doctors.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists emphasized that abortion care constitutes essential healthcare and must be accessible throughout Wales. The Welsh government acknowledged the issue, stating women should access healthcare services closer to home, and indicated that improving abortion services has been designated as a priority within an enhanced women’s health plan.
