However, analysis of brain activity across the entire canine brain revealed a more nuanced capability. Dogs showed different patterns of neural activity when distinguishing fearful faces from angry ones and fearful faces from sad ones, though they could not differentiate between angry and sad expressions. Researchers suggested that different negative emotions might trigger distinct neural responses because they represent varying types of threat to an animal.
The study has acknowledged limitations, including a small sample size and a participant group predominantly composed of border collies that were all healthy with no behavioral issues. Researchers noted that dogs may require additional contextual information, such as body language, to fully distinguish between certain expressions, and training that incorporates positive facial expressions could potentially enhance learning outcomes in dogs.
