The situation continues to deteriorate amid multiple complicating factors, including regional instability, displacement of populations, labor actions by health workers, and significant population movements that facilitate transmission. WHO assessments characterize the outbreak as uncontrolled and project it may eventually exceed the scale of the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola epidemic, which resulted in more than 11,000 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Currently, no approved vaccines or treatments exist specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, with clinical development ongoing.
