Earlier this month, the EBU implemented updated rules stating that countries involved in armed conflicts would be ineligible to host the contest if they won, but Avrotros determined these measures did not adequately address the underlying issues.
This marks the second consecutive year the Netherlands has withdrawn from the competition. The country sat out the current year’s event in Vienna following Israel’s participation in the contest. However, Avrotros’s withdrawal does not necessarily preclude Dutch representation, as other public broadcasters within the country’s media structure could potentially assume responsibility for participation.
Taco Zimmerman, director general of Avrotros, stated that while Eurovision was originally designed to unite nations and communities, it has increasingly become divisive due to international conflicts. He emphasized that as a public broadcaster, the organization’s values guided this difficult decision. The EBU expressed regret over the withdrawal while committing to dialogue with NPO, the umbrella organization for Dutch public service media, regarding alternative broadcaster participation.
The rule changes approved by the contest’s governing body were also designed to address situations where a “sensitive geopolitical situation” could affect the security, stability, or safety of a host nation or its region. Beyond Israel, the rules would also apply to Ukraine, which has been engaged in an ongoing military conflict since 2022.
