Alexander Zinell, chief executive of Fraport Greece which operates 14 airports across the country, has joined other transportation industry leaders in calling for significant changes to the EU’s entry-exit system. The system, which began operation last October, requires non-EU passengers to provide fingerprints and photographs upon arrival and verification each time they cross Schengen zone borders.
Zinell’s airports have had to implement temporary measures to manage passenger flow, including erecting gazebos to provide shade for visitors waiting in queues and establishing priority processing for vulnerable travelers. The executive described the current situation as problematic for passenger experience and raised safety concerns. He emphasized that the biometric check procedures require substantial revision, including the ability for travelers to complete registration processes prior to airport arrival.
The system has generated complaints across multiple European nations. The International Air Transport Association has requested a suspension of controls until the following summer, citing concerns about disruptions at popular holiday destinations. Ryanair and other carriers have reported queuing problems at airports including Alicante, Málaga, and Palma. British ferry services operating across the English Channel face potential congestion, with Dover port authorities warning of significant delays during peak summer travel periods beginning from 17 July.
EU border officials currently retain discretionary authority to pause checks during peak travel times, though this flexibility is scheduled to expire in September. Zinell identified this temporary measure as critical to preventing system failure. EU authorities have acknowledged the system is imperfect but have declined requests for suspension, noting that operational difficulties are concentrated at approximately 20 of 1,500 border crossing points, and member states are expected to implement localized solutions.
