Fox won't renegotiate NFL media rights before current deal expires, CEO Lachlan Murdoch says

Fox announced it will not pursue early renegotiations of its NFL media rights agreement, instead maintaining its current contractual relationship through the 2029 season. Chief Executive Officer Lachlan Murdoch made the statement during a Thursday earnings call, indicating that Fox has concluded preliminary discussions with the league and determined that amendments to the existing deal are not being pursued at this time.

The NFL had been engaged in initial negotiations with both Fox and CBS-parent Paramount Skydance regarding modifications to their respective media rights contracts. The league sought to eliminate opt-out clauses within the agreements and increase the cost of live broadcasting rights. Without such opt-outs, the deals with Fox and Paramount would extend through the end of the 2033-34 season. Murdoch indicated that Fox would be prepared to discuss the opt-out periods and subsequent arrangements at a time closer to the 2030 season, following customary negotiation timelines.

The NFL continues to maintain flexibility to pursue early renewals with other media partners and to add new broadcast partners as needed. The league has recently expanded its media portfolio to include agreements with YouTube and Netflix. An NFL spokesperson declined to comment on Murdoch’s remarks regarding the Fox negotiations.

Commissioner Roger Goodell has previously expressed the view that NFL broadcasting rights are undervalued relative to other major sports properties. The NBA secured an 11-year, $77 billion media rights deal in 2024, substantially increasing its annual revenue. The NFL’s current media rights arrangements, valued at more than $100 billion, were finalized in 2021. Early discussions between the NFL and Paramount included proposals for nearly $1 billion in annual cost increases in exchange for guaranteed carriage through 2034.

Disney’s Chief Financial Officer reported separately that the NFL has not yet initiated discussions regarding a new agreement with the company, which currently holds rights extending into the 2030s.
