Lead author Manuel Gonzalez Rivero from the Australian Institute of Marine Science indicated that while corals possess the biological capacity to recover given sufficient time, current environmental conditions do not permit such recovery windows.

The frequency of bleaching events has approximately doubled in recent years, according to researchers. A particularly severe bleaching event in 2023 affected 77 percent of the world’s coral reef areas, representing the most extensive such occurrence on record. Scientists warn that elevated global temperatures make another major bleaching event very likely in the coming months.

Coral reefs serve as critical indicators of ocean ecosystem health, supporting more than 25 percent of marine life despite occupying less than 1 percent of the ocean floor. The deterioration of these ecosystems carries significant implications for marine biodiversity and coastal communities that depend on reef-associated fisheries and resources.

The GCRMN’s warning coincided with announcements that multiple leaders from the Pacific Islands Forum will not attend the organization’s upcoming summit, an annual gathering traditionally focused on regional cooperation and discussion of challenges including climate change and ocean preservation.
