Google has introduced a new capability for its Gemini Notebook application that enables users to incorporate books purchased through Google Play Books into their note-taking workspace. The “Expert Intelligence” feature allows users to extract information from literary sources and interact with the content through AI-powered tools, including generating recipes, visual infographics, and audio podcasts based on book material.
The feature will initially support more than 100,000 titles from major publishers including Penguin Random House, Johns Hopkins University Press, Macmillan Publishers, and O’Reilly Media. Google has also collaborated with 15 prominent authors, including Michael Pollan, Kim Scott, Steven Pinker, and Jennifer Wallace, to create customized “Featured Notebooks” that include supplementary materials, author introductions, and curated resources. Books compatible with Expert Intelligence will be identified through a “Gemini Notebook” badge in the “Tools” section on Google Play Books.
According to Google Labs editorial director Steven Johnson, demonstrations of the tool showed its potential applications, such as creating recipe compilations from a cookbook or applying management principles from a business-focused title to address workplace challenges. Users can also view complete book text directly within the Notebook interface.
Google has implemented access controls to protect publisher and author interests. When a Notebook containing a purchased book is shared with another user, individuals who have not bought that specific title will see it listed as a source but cannot access the full text or related information. Such restricted content will instead direct users to Google Play Books where they can make a purchase.
Google indicated that Expert Intelligence functionality will eventually extend to AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, both of which already support pulling information from Gemini Notebook. The company also plans to expand the feature to include scholarly articles, magazine content, and newspaper publications in the future.
