Greenwich Council to decide on licence for new Secret Cinema venue

Secret Cinema, an entertainment company known for producing immersive cinema experiences, has submitted an application for a premises licence at a new location on the Greenwich Peninsula in south-east London. The facility would be permitted to operate and serve alcohol until 23:30 BST on weekdays and midnight at weekends.

GreenwichCouncil is scheduled to make a determination regarding the licence application on 11 August. The submission has generated two formal objections from local residents who raised concerns about potential increases in noise and disturbance affecting nearby neighbourhoods. The local authority previously granted Secret Cinema planning permission to construct a 1,500-seat venue in the preceding month.

The venue is intended to function on a temporary basis for a period of 10 years, after which the land will be redeveloped for residential tower blocks in accordance with the Greenwich Peninsula Masterplan. Secret Cinema indicated that the proposed facility will feature flexible design capabilities to accommodate a series of immersive productions based on prominent film titles. The company’s offerings combine film screenings with live theatrical performances and themed environments designed to engage audiences with cinematic narratives.

Secret Cinema has operated immersive film productions throughout London since 2007. Current offerings include Grease The Immersive Movie Musical at Battersea Park through mid-September, with previous productions featuring properties such as Guardians of the Galaxy in Wembley in 2022 and Stranger Things in Canning Town in 2019. The new venue will be positioned adjacent to the Troubadour Theatre, also under construction, which received planning permission the previous month for a 3,000-seat theatre that will rank as London’s largest by capacity upon completion.
