Guernsey health service reviews cost almost £188,000

Guernsey’s Health & Social Care committee engaged in multiple independent investigations and reviews between 2021 and 2025, according to information disclosed by the government. The Health & Social Care President George Oswald indicated that 20 such reviews had been either directly commissioned by or conducted on behalf of the committee during this five-year period.

The total expenditure for these reviews reached £187,479. The investigations examined various departments within the island’s health system, with particular focus on pathology, maternity, and ophthalmology services. The organizations and individuals responsible for conducting these reviews came from diverse sources, including the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Isle of Man’s head of maternity, and various external consultancy firms.

The findings from these reports generated several recommendations for operational improvements across the health service. Key recommendations included the addition of extra consultants and locum coverage for the island’s ear, nose and throat service, as well as measures designed to strengthen the resilience and operational capacity of the pathology department.

Oswald’s disclosure to Deputy Gavin St Pier also noted that two additional reports, while not directly commissioned specifically for or on behalf of the Health & Social Care committee, had been conducted during the same five-year span and were deemed relevant to the committee’s service delivery.
