Stunt performers Jeremy Fitzgerald and Tim Soergel have received Emmy nominations for their work on the third episode of Fallout’s second season, titled “The Profligate.” Their nomination centers on a fight sequence featuring Power Armor-clad characters battling a Securitron security robot, culminating in a punch directed at the robot’s chest screen.
Fitzgerald, who doubles as the character Maximus, described the physical demands of operating the 120-pound suit, which includes 12-inch blocks on the feet that function like stilts. During the sequence, he had to navigate through collapsing office furniture while maintaining accuracy with a punch despite limited visibility extending only 15 feet ahead. He noted that the physical toll of another season two fight scene with a Deathclaw character left him incapacitated for three days. Soergel, who doubles as Xander, worked through a learning process to expand what was possible in the suits, discovering techniques to raise his arms over his head by using momentum—an achievement initially deemed impossible. The two performers found they could enhance their creative options by feeding off each other’s discoveries.
Both Fitzgerald and Soergel were new to the production for season two, having not worked on the first season. The Power Armor suits were created by Legacy Effects, an Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning special effects studio. To support the performers through demanding shooting days, Legacy Effects implemented modifications for season two, including an endoskeleton structure that transfers weight from the shoulders to the hips during extended standing periods, a specialized 4.5-foot-tall support chair, and a cooling suit to help performers maintain stamina. These enhancements enabled the stunt team to work longer and accomplish more during 13-hour shooting days. Both performers received their first Emmy nominations for this work.
