The World Meteorological Organization released forecasts indicating that a developing El Niño weather system will intensify from August through October, bringing elevated global temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns worldwide. The organization cautioned that some regions will experience increased precipitation while others face significant drought risks. Pacific ocean temperatures have reached unusually warm levels earlier in the typical El Niño cycle than observed in past years, with water temperatures continuing to rise.
UN Secretary General António Guterres characterized the strengthening system as “adding fuel to a planet already on fire” and noted that current conditions represent uncharted territory for global weather patterns. The WMO reported that temperatures in several regions are likely to exceed 2.9 degrees Celsius above normal levels. Marine heatwaves have already caused concern among scientists and are expected to worsen in the coming months.
India faces particular vulnerability, with forecasters warning of reduced monsoon rainfall that threatens agricultural productivity and increases the risk of drought across the Indian Ocean basin. Drier conditions are also anticipated across portions of equatorial Africa, southern and eastern Australia, large areas of South America, and parts of North America. Conversely, southern Europe, central Asia, the Horn of Africa, and southeastern South America are expected to receive above-normal precipitation.
The region has already endured severe weather impacts, including record-breaking heatwaves beginning in May and extensive wildfires across France and Spain that have caused significant destruction and displacement. WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo urged governments to prepare emergency response measures and implement preventative strategies ahead of anticipated hazards. Both officials emphasized that immediate action on emissions reduction and workforce protection measures are essential to mitigate the intensifying climate crisis.
