Marks & Spencer opened a revamped version of its Pantheon store on Oxford Street, designed to serve as a template for transforming the retailer’s portfolio of over 200 large outlets. Chief Executive Stuart Machin described the undertaking as part of one of the most important periods in the company’s 142-year history, following a challenging year marked by a significant cyber-attack that disrupted online operations for nearly seven weeks and reduced profits by more than £300 million.
Machin outlined an ambitious investment program totaling £700 million directed toward store renovations, supply chain modernization, and product improvements. The retailer is pursuing a target of 200 full-line stores in the United Kingdom after closing numerous older and underperforming locations. A separate expansion strategy focuses on the food division, which is opening 18 new food-only stores this year as part of a plan to reach 420 outlets, up from the current 335 directly operated stores.
The company’s performance has shown signs of recovery across key metrics. The food business has emerged as the fastest-growing food retailer in the United Kingdom with sales increasing 16 percent in recent quarterly results, maintaining an all-time high market share of 4.1 percent. In fashion, M&S has reclaimed the top position in style perception and expanded its overall market share in the clothing and footwear sector to above 10 percent, attracting younger demographic groups.
Machin indicated that climbing back to the £1 billion annual pre-tax profit level achieved briefly in 2008 was not the primary objective. Instead, he emphasized building a growth-oriented business with long-term shareholder returns. The company’s next major project involves demolishing and rebuilding its Marble Arch location, a plan approved by housing authorities in 2024 following a legal challenge. The new 10-storey structure will incorporate two and a half floors of retail space along with offices and a gym, with construction expected to span four years during which operations will relocate to a temporary nearby location.
