According to a Department of Justice press release, Taele was first spotted at the golf club on July 31, wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos. He returned two days later, prompting golf club staff to alert federal security personnel. Law enforcement discovered Taele had an active warrant for a robbery in El Segundo. Authorities found a 16-round magazine of hollow-point ammunition during a search, a loaded 9mm pistol with hollow-point ammunition in his vehicle, binoculars, and a badge reading “security protection agent.”
At his residence, detectives discovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, other firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, an earpiece, two radio signal devices, and multiple notebooks containing statements authorities characterized as concerning. Bill Essayli, first assistant U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, stated at the time of Taele’s arrest that the investigation was ongoing and at an early stage. “Federal and local law enforcement stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring,” Essayli said. Taele is a former Marine who served from 2008 to 2016 and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
