Kathie Hoops, a longtime financial executive at Paramount Pictures, passed away on July 31 at age 66 after a cancer-related illness. She died in Woodland Hills, according to an announcement made by her friend and former colleague Jill Glosser.
Hoops held a prominent role in the studio’s financial operations for nearly four decades, with 30 years spent as vice president of residuals. In this capacity, she oversaw the department responsible for managing the setup, security protocols, calculations and distribution of residual payments for films produced or acquired by the studio.
Beyond her primary duties, Hoops became recognized as an industry specialist in residual matters. She contributed significantly to Paramount’s strategic operations by providing analysis and guidance on residual formulas used during labor negotiations and corporate financial planning. She was also instrumental in the development and rollout of new software infrastructure designed to streamline residual payment processing.
Hoops began her professional journey at Paramount’s parent company, Gulf + Western, in New York in March 1984, relocating to the Los Angeles studio operations in May 1986. She was elevated to vice president of residuals in February 1994, a position she held until her departure in April 2024 as part of an industry-wide workforce reduction. She earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1982 after studying at Ithaca College in New York and Rider University in New Jersey.
She is survived by her husband Richard, her children Allison and Casey, and multiple siblings. A celebration of life is in the planning stages.
