The Liberatum cultural organization announced that Empire creator Lee Daniels, Capernaum director Nadine Labaki, and Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic will be honored with the 2026 Liberatum Pioneer Awards. The awards are presented by Liberatum, a cultural diplomacy organization, and recognize artists whose work has challenged conventions and expanded artistic boundaries while promoting human dignity.
The award presentations are scheduled for Sept 6 and 7 during the Venice Film Festival as part of the inaugural Liberatum Art & Cinema program. The event marks the organization’s twenty-fifth anniversary and features a multidisciplinary format combining various artistic disciplines.
Daniels is being recognized for his directorial work in bringing narratives previously underrepresented in mainstream American media to prominent audiences. His filmography includes Precious, The Butler, and Empire, with a particular focus on depicting Black life, trauma, and family dynamics. Liberatum noted that his approach has created space within the industry for stories previously viewed as commercially risky.
Labaki, a Lebanese director, is honored for her international recognition of Middle Eastern narratives. Her films Where Do We Go Now? and Capernaum both premiered at Cannes, with the latter receiving the Jury Prize and an Oscar nomination for best international feature. Her work combines documentary techniques with narrative storytelling to address issues of displacement and conflict.
Abramovic, known for performance art including her 2010 piece “The Artist Is Present,” is recognized for establishing performance art as a distinct discipline. The work involved her sitting silently at a table for extended periods while inviting audience members to sit across from her. She is currently the subject of a major solo exhibition at Venice’s Gallerie dell’Accademia, making her the first living woman artist to receive this honor in the institution’s history. Previous Liberatum Pioneer Award recipients include Angela Bassett, Ivete Sacramento, and Ellen Burstyn.
