LIV Golf secures unnamed lead investor for 2027 season

LIV Golf announced it has finalized a signed agreement with a new lead investor to sustain the breakaway golf tour beyond the current season. The agreement has received approval from the LIV Golf board, with the transaction expected to close in September. The identity of the investor and specific financial terms were not disclosed in the announcement.

The move comes after the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which had invested more than $5 billion since the league’s launch in 2022, announced in April that it would end its financial support at the conclusion of the current season. That withdrawal had raised significant questions about the tour’s viability moving forward.

Chief Executive Scott O’Neil stated that the new investment arrangement would extend through 2027 and beyond, and indicated that LIV players would become “majority equity holders” in the competition. O’Neil characterized this structure as unprecedented for major global sports leagues. Additionally, the organization is pursuing a multi-partner funding model, with O’Neil noting interest from more than a dozen potential minority investors.

Starting next season, LIV will operate with 10 events, consisting of five competitions in the United States and five held internationally. This represents a reduction from the 14 events originally planned for the current season. In April, the organization postponed its New Orleans event scheduled for June due to uncertainties surrounding the tour’s future, and no rescheduled date has been announced.

The LIV roster continues to feature major championship winners including Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, Martin Kaymer, and Sergio Garcia, though some players including Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have returned to the PGA Tour following the introduction of a returning member program. In July, the PGA Tour and DP World Tour formalized an alliance with the Asian Tour, further complicating the competitive landscape for LIV Golf.
