Liverpool: Key questions answered as Amit Bhatia, Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin agree purchase of strategic minority stake

Fenway Sports Group has agreed to sell a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club to an investment consortium fronted by British Indian entrepreneur Amit Bhatia. The group includes Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and among the world’s wealthiest individuals, as well as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. According to reports, the consortium is acquiring approximately one-third of the club in a transaction that values Liverpool at more than £5.2bn.

Bhatia, age 46, has an investment banking background and currently manages AyBe Capital, a multi-asset investment firm operating across technology, media, property, retail and health sectors. He is married to Vanisha Mittal Bhatia, daughter of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. Bezos, estimated to be the world’s third-richest person with a fortune around $281bn, has previously explored acquisitions in American sports but does not currently hold significant stakes in other sports teams. Saverin, age 44, was part of a previous consortium that made an unsuccessful bid for Chelsea in 2022.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. The consortium holds an option to become majority shareholders of the Premier League club at a valuation around $8bn within the next 12 months, according to reports. FSG will maintain majority ownership and operational control following the investment, with the deal representing a significant valuation increase from FSG’s initial £300m acquisition of the club in October 2010.

Liverpool ranks as the fourth most valuable club in world football. The agreement includes a framework for potential future investment from the Bezos-backed group, though sources emphasized such an arrangement does not guarantee additional future transactions. The club has previously accepted minority stakes from Dynasty Equity, RedBird Capital, and Arctos Sports Partners.
