Mahershala Ali has officially stated that the Marvel Blade reboot will not be produced. The two-time Academy Award winner had been attached to the role since 2019, taking on the vampire-hunting character that was previously portrayed by Wesley Snipes in three films between 1998 and 2004.
During an interview with GQ, Ali addressed the project’s cancellation directly. He stated that if Marvel had committed to proceeding, he would have been ready to move forward. He indicated a desire to move beyond questions regarding the film’s fate, noting that the responsibility for explanations rests with the studio rather than himself. Ali expressed some disappointment with how the situation concluded, but ultimately framed the outcome as part of the natural course of his career.
The project had endured an extended development period with multiple directors and screenwriters attached at various points. Director Bassam Tariq was set to helm the film at one stage. Subsequently, Ali and Tariq collaborated on the revenge thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which premiered at this year’s Toronto film festival. Ali had previously contributed his voice to the character in a post-credits sequence in 2021’s Eternals.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige had previously acknowledged the project’s failure, describing his feelings about not bringing it to completion. Ali reflected on the situation philosophically, noting that his extensive career experience has taught him that opportunities either align with one’s path or they do not. He emphasized that the decision not to proceed came from the studio’s side rather than his own.
Looking ahead, Ali’s upcoming projects include voice work for the stop-motion animated feature Wildwood, which also features Carey Mulligan and Angela Bassett, as well as the delayed third Spider-Verse animated installment. He also noted that some of his recent reduced visibility in major film roles was not entirely of his own choosing.
