Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has confirmed that the Marvel Blade reboot he was attached to will not proceed. Ali was cast in the role in 2019 to play the vampire-hunting character, which had previously been portrayed by Wesley Snipes in three films released between 1998 and 2004.
The project spent years in development with multiple directors and screenwriters cycling through before ultimately being shelved. In a recent interview with GQ, Ali stated that had Marvel shown genuine commitment to the film, he would have completed it. He expressed his desire to move beyond inquiries regarding the reboot’s status, redirecting such questions to Marvel leadership.
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige previously characterized his inability to bring the project to fruition as making him feel like a “gigantic loser.” The production had at one point been set to be helmed by Bassam Tariq, director of Mogul Mowgli. Ali and Tariq subsequently collaborated on a different project, the revenge thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which is scheduled to premiere at this year’s Toronto film festival.
Regarding the reboot’s failure, Ali reflected that he ultimately accepted the outcome as part of his ongoing career trajectory. He noted that through three decades of professional work, he has learned to distinguish between opportunities meant for him and those that are not. Ali added that he did not feel positive about how the situation concluded, though he emphasized no ill will toward those involved.
Since winning consecutive best supporting actor Oscars in 2017 and 2019, Ali has appeared in Jurassic World Rebirth and Leave the World Behind, along with providing voice work for the Spider-Verse series. He acknowledged that his relative absence from major releases has not been entirely by his choosing. Upcoming projects include voice roles in the stop-motion adventure Wildwood, featuring Carey Mulligan and Angela Bassett, and in the delayed third Spider-Verse installment.
