National Television Awards pick first all-female shortlist for drama acting award

The National Television Awards has unveiled its nominees across 15 categories, marking a historic moment with an all-female shortlist in the drama performance award for the first time in the event’s history.

The five contenders in the drama category include returning winner Sheridan Smith, recognized for her portrayal of Ann Ming in ITV’s true crime series I Fought The Law. Ruth Jones, known for her role in Gavin & Stacey, earned a nomination for her performance in the Netflix thriller Run Away. The slate also features Vicky McClure for her work in Trigger Point, Ella Bruccoleri from the period drama The Other Bennet Sister, and veteran actress Judy Parfitt from the medical series Call The Midwife. The nominees were selected through public voting from a preliminary list that included male-led performances from established actors.

Stacey Solomon has accumulated three nominations across the ceremony, including consideration in the TV presenter category where she will compete against Ant and Dec, Sir David Attenborough, Claudia Winkleman, and Alison Hammond. The awards also introduced a new category dedicated to celebrity-led reality docuseries, featuring Solomon alongside Joe Swash, boxer Tyson Fury, television presenter Jeremy Clarkson, and entertainment personalities Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse.

Mrs Brown’s Boys appeared on the comedy shortlist despite recent production disruptions. Additional notable selections include the Canadian romance drama Heated Rivalry in the new drama category and Strictly Come Dancing’s final series in the talent show category. The ceremony will be held at London’s O2 arena and broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX on 8 September, hosted by comedian Joel Dommett. The public voting period is currently open through midday on that date.
