To incentivize participation, Octopus is offering customers enrolled in its rewards program a complimentary hour of electricity during the following weekend in exchange for conservation efforts during the eclipse. The initiative leverages the supplier’s existing “saving sessions” program, which provides rewards when households adjust consumption in response to renewable energy availability.
The National Energy System Operator has indicated it has been preparing for over a year to manage the eclipse’s effects on the grid. System operators across Europe are facing additional pressure because existing power systems are already strained due to ongoing heatwaves that have forced nuclear and coal plants to reduce or cease operations. Hydropower capacity in Norway, a major electricity exporter to continental Europe, has declined to its lowest levels in 30 years due to drought conditions.
Octopus estimates that homes could collectively provide approximately 13 gigawatts of flexible capacity to support the electricity system through smart appliances, electric vehicles, and home batteries, though only a fraction of this potential is currently being utilized.
