Current federal dietary guidelines recommend 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, and most Americans meet this higher range. The Recommended Dietary Allowance suggests 0.8 grams per kilogram. Several experts cautioned that older adults may require more protein than standard recommendations, as the body’s ability to synthesize protein declines with age. The PROT-AGE study, developed by the European Geriatric Medicine Society, recommends 1 to 1.2 grams per kilogram for older adults, with higher intake for those who exercise regularly.

Experts expressed particular concern about the risks of protein restriction for sedentary individuals and those taking GLP-1 weight loss medications. Reducing protein intake in these populations could accelerate muscle loss and threaten independence and functional ability in older age. Some clinicians noted that if sedentary individuals reduce protein without lowering overall calorie intake, replacement macronutrients like carbohydrates could increase risks of chronic metabolic conditions. GLP-1 medications already carry risks of muscle mass loss, making adequate protein intake especially critical for patients on these drugs.
