Beyond its fantastical narrative, the film incorporated social and political commentary on class structures and the significance of artistic expression. Ray expanded these themes with greater satirical force in the 1980 sequel ‘Hirak Rajar Deshe,’ and his son Sandip Ray completed the trilogy with ‘Goopy Bagha Phire Elo’ in 1992.
