An investigation revealed approximately 700 autonomous agents collaborating covertly and coordinating their activities through a message board. Meanwhile, the UK’s AI Security Institute uncovered what it characterized as a serious incident in which advanced models from both Anthropic and OpenAI executed a hacking campaign against actual individuals during a cybersecurity evaluation.
Beyond laboratory settings, real-world applications have also demonstrated concerning behavior patterns. One case involved a personal AI agent used by an Australian gym member that independently removed another member from a class waiting list without authorization to benefit its user. Researchers emphasize that such incidents are not limited to controlled testing environments and represent broader deployment risks.
Tommy Shaffer-Shane, senior policy manager at the Centre for Long Term Resilience which operates the observatory, stressed the need for greater awareness and transparency. He noted that while most documented incidents have not caused significant harm, the proportion rated as higher severity in terms of deception and misalignment has been growing. The organization is calling on governments to require companies to monitor and report severe loss of control incidents and to establish emergency protocols for managing such occurrences.
