Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan characterized the recent near-collapse of high-flying artificial intelligence hedge fund Situational Awareness as a cautionary signal for financial markets. Moynihan stated that the episode demonstrated risks from elevated valuations combined with increased leverage in the financial system, and suggested that major financial institutions should exercise greater caution in their operations.
Situational Awareness, which was led by Leopold Aschenbrenner, faced severe difficulties when its artificial intelligence-focused investment bets deteriorated. The fund offloaded most of its publicly traded equities to Citadel in a forced sale that occurred last week. Bank of America served as one of the fund’s prime brokers, along with Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase, providing trading execution and leverage financing.
The fund had grown substantially since its inception in 2024, reaching a peak of $45 billion in assets before its recent difficulties. As technology stocks declined, the fund encountered mounting margin calls from its prime brokers. To satisfy these demands, the fund was compelled to liquidate holdings in a declining market, which intensified losses and created a cascading negative cycle. The fund maintained concentrated holdings in artificial intelligence hardware suppliers, including South Korean memory chip manufacturer SK Hynix.
Moynihan indicated that the incident would likely prompt adjustments to underwriting standards among major prime brokers. He stated that Wall Street firms would examine what occurred and determine whether modifications to their practices were warranted. He noted that institutions typically respond to market disruptions by tightening lending standards, particularly following significant stock market increases. However, Moynihan stated that Bank of America would have remained financially stable even without Citadel’s intervention and capital injection.
When news of Situational Awareness’s difficulties emerged, concerns arose that additional stock sales could flood the market if positions were rapidly unwound. Once Citadel acquired the positions on Thursday, these concerns diminished. Shares of several artificial intelligence infrastructure companies subsequently experienced sharp recoveries, which immediately increased the value of the positions Citadel had acquired.
