The owner of Sports Direct through his Frasers Group company has completed the purchase of Harvey Nichols, the upmarket department store chain, after it entered administration. The acquisition was announced on Thursday following the retailer’s acknowledgment that it faced potential insolvency without new funding sources. The transaction valued the business at around £40m according to sources familiar with the deal.
Harvey Nichols operates 13 locations globally, including five major UK stores and smaller outlets across multiple countries. Frasers is acquiring the flagship London Knightsbridge location along with stores in Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, and Manchester. The group is continuing discussions regarding the Dublin location, where it has already acquired certain inventory and fixtures. Overseas franchise operations in the Middle East and Asia will continue under existing arrangements. The retailer’s restaurant located in the Oxo Tower in London is being sold separately, with plans underway to maintain around 100 jobs at that location.
The parent company indicated that significant structural changes will be necessary to establish a sustainable operating model. This includes a comprehensive review of store locations, organizational staffing, operational procedures, and expense management. The new owner has announced intentions to rebrand four UK locations—those in Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, and Bristol—under either the House of Fraser or Flannels banners, while retaining the Harvey Nichols brand at the Knightsbridge and Edinburgh flagship stores.
Harvey Nichols, founded in 1831 as a linen merchant, has faced substantial financial headwinds in recent years. The business reported a post-tax loss of £105m for the year ending in March, with company directors declaring it was not a viable going concern due to projected cash depletion within twelve months. Challenges have included intensified competition from other luxury retailers, reduced spending from its affluent customer base amid cost-of-living pressures, and prolonged absence of high-spending international tourists following pandemic-related disruptions. The acquisition secures employment for more than 1,000 workers and marks another addition to Ashley’s portfolio of acquired premium retail brands.
