Indian filmmaker Sriram Raghavan is creating new projects for Matchbox Shots, a Mumbai-based production company. One project centers on true crime material adapted in Raghavan’s distinctive style, while another is a fictional thriller in the tonal territory of his 2007 neo-noir heist film “Johnny Gaddaar.” Raghavan noted that next year marks two decades since “Johnny Gaddaar,” which served as the screen debut of actor Neil Nitin Mukesh and has developed a devoted following since its release.
Matchbox Shots is expanding its production slate beyond Raghavan’s projects. The company is developing a second season of “Scoop” for Netflix with director Hansal Mehta, a dark comedy thriller from filmmaker Vasan Bala, and another thriller directed by Jasmeet Reen. According to Matchbox executive Sanjay Routray, the variety reflects the company’s approach to serve both domestic and international audiences with distinct storytelling approaches. The company’s current success is anchored by “Operation Safed Sagar,” a war series that achieved significant prominence on Netflix’s global platform within its second week, reaching number two on the global non-English shows chart and appearing in the top 10 across 40 territories.
The production of “Operation Safed Sagar” represented a substantial logistical undertaking, involving more than 450 crew members working at elevations exceeding 16,000 feet at active air force installations. The production utilized actual MiG fighter jets and custom-built cockpit simulation technology, with infrastructure including logistics, power, accommodation, and medical support constructed specifically for the shoot. This effort demonstrated Matchbox Shots’ capacity to handle large-scale productions, according to company leadership.
Raghavan’s long-standing relationship with Matchbox dates to the company’s origins with “Andhadhun,” a 2018 thriller about a blind pianist that became a global commercial success. The film generated $62.4 million worldwide against a production budget of INR160 million, with particular strength in the Chinese market where it earned $47.1 million. Beyond Raghavan’s involvement, Matchbox has been acquiring book rights to develop into series and films, expanding its portfolio of proprietary intellectual property for future projects.
