Specifically, participants with no diabetes, no high blood pressure, and no smoking history averaged 30.1 additional dementia-free years, while those with one risk factor averaged 26.3 years, those with two averaged 21 years, and those with all three had just over 17 years.
The study also documented demographic variations, finding that women maintained longer dementia-free periods than men regardless of risk factor burden, and that white participants had more dementia-free years than black participants. Researchers emphasized that these three factors typically emerge during midlife and produce sustained effects on neurodegenerative disease pathways.
Experts noted that global dementia cases are projected to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050, though approximately half of cases worldwide could potentially be prevented or delayed. The findings underscore the importance of cardiovascular health management beginning at age 45 as a strategy for preserving cognitive function in later life.
