Study finds three midlife health factors that could delay dementia for 13 years

A study published in the medical journal Neurology examined the connection between midlife health factors and dementia-free lifespan. Researchers from NYU Langone Health analyzed data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, which has tracked Americans since 1986. The analysis included 12,409 participants with an average age of 56 who had not yet developed dementia at the time of initial assessment.

Participants were evaluated for three vascular risk factors: high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and smoking status. The cohort was then monitored for approximately 26 years on average. During the follow-up period, 3,008 participants developed dementia while 5,238 died without developing the condition. Those who had none of the three risk factors lived an average of 30.1 additional years free from dementia. In contrast, those with all three risk factors lived an average of just over 17 years without dementia, representing a difference of almost 13 years between the two groups.

The study found a progressive relationship between risk factor accumulation and dementia-free years. Participants with one risk factor averaged 26.3 dementia-free years, those with two risk factors averaged 21 years, and those with three averaged just over 17 years. The research also revealed disparities by gender and race, with women experiencing more dementia-free years than men regardless of risk factor status, and white participants having more dementia-free years than black participants.

Senior investigator Dr. Josef Coresh emphasized the importance of addressing these factors during middle age to preserve brain health. The findings suggest that high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and smoking exert lasting effects on neurodegeneration, making early identification and management critical. Experts note that dementia cases globally are projected to nearly triple to 153 million by 2050, though research indicates that addressing modifiable risk factors could prevent or delay nearly half of all dementia cases worldwide.
