Sunrun to Supply Voltus with Energy Capacity for AI Hyperscaler Agreements

Sunrun announced a partnership with Voltus to supply energy capacity from a portion of its residential storage-plus-solar systems to support Voltus’s Bring Your Own Capacity program serving artificial intelligence hyperscalers. The agreement covers operations in the PJM and MISO grid regions.

Voltus’s Bring Your Own Capacity program was introduced last year as a mechanism enabling large energy consumers, particularly data center operators, to contribute firm and flexible power capacity in support of grid operations. The platform orchestrates distributed energy resources including batteries and smart thermostats to reduce electricity demand during periods of grid stress. Participating homeowners and businesses receive compensation for their involvement in the program.

Sunrun CEO Mary Powell characterized the collaboration as an effort to optimize available power resources across the nation, noting that home battery systems supported by hyperscaler funding represent a significant untapped capacity source. Voltus CEO Dana Guernsey emphasized the program’s focus on converting distributed resources into dependable grid capacity while maximizing financial returns for participants.

The Sunrun-Voltus partnership complements a separate initiative involving Sunrun, Renew Home, and Tesla aimed at mobilizing over 16.8 gigawatts of flexible capacity from home batteries, solar installations, smart thermostats, and electric vehicles. Both efforts seek to rapidly and cost-effectively address rising electricity demand from data centers and grid operators by leveraging existing distributed energy infrastructure.
