The research indicated a dose-dependent relationship, meaning cardiovascular event rates increased alongside xylitol blood levels. This pattern held consistently across different demographic groups regardless of age and sex, and remained independent of other risk factors such as body mass index, hypertension, diabetes, and lipid levels. Dr. Marco Witkowski, the study’s lead author from Charité university hospital in Berlin, noted that previous research had shown xylitol can enhance clotting ability in platelets.

Experts emphasized that while these findings warrant further investigation, the observational nature of the study means causality cannot be definitively established. Professor Dan Atar from the European Society of Cardiology noted that regulatory agencies have previously deemed artificial sweeteners safe, making these results particularly significant. Health professionals stressed the importance of reducing processed food consumption generally while cautioning against simply replacing xylitol-containing products with sugar-based alternatives, given ongoing concerns about excess sugar intake.
