Bitters End has announced North American distribution for “All the Lovers in the Night,” a film adaptation of Mieko Kawakami’s acclaimed novel featuring actors Yukino Kishii and Tadanobu Asano. The production premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes earlier this year. Several Futures has acquired distribution rights for the United States, while Ritual Films will handle Canada. Additional distribution agreements have been finalized with Movies Matter for Thailand.

Previous territorial announcements include France through Art House Films, which also distributed director Yukiko Sode’s earlier work “Aristocrats” to over 71,000 admissions. Other confirmed territories include Spain, Bulgaria, Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Indonesia, with distributors ranging from Atalante to Edko Films across these regions.
The narrative centers on Fuyuko, a freelance proofreader whose solitary routine changes following an encounter with Mitsutsuka, a high school physics instructor, at a community cultural venue. Kishii portrays Fuyuko while Asano takes on the role of Mitsutsuka. Sode served as both writer and director for the adaptation, drawing from Kawakami’s source material. The author’s novel achieved international recognition and became the first Japanese fiction work to reach the shortlist for the U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award.
Sode’s previous directorial effort, “Aristocrats,” debuted at the International Film Festival Rotterdam before its French theatrical release. She also wrote and directed the Disney+ series “Because We Forget Everything.” Kishii has earned international recognition for her performance in “Small, Slow But Steady,” which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and earned her the best actress award at the Japan Academy Film Prize. Asano garnered attention for his role as Lord Kashigi Yabushige in the FX series “Shōgun,” winning a Golden Globe for best supporting actor on television and earning a Primetime Emmy nomination, marking the first such nomination for a Japanese actor in that category. The film will open in Japan on Nov. 13.
