‘The Drop’ Trailer Sees ‘Snowfall’ Characters Go After “New Gold Rush” of West Coast Rap

FX and Hulu will premiere The Drop, a spinoff of the series Snowfall, set in 1990s Los Angeles. The show follows characters Wanda Bell and Leon Simmons as they attempt to reinvent themselves in the city during the aftermath of the crack epidemic and the emergence of West Coast rap.

Wanda Bell, portrayed by Gail Bean, enters the music business with aspirations to develop West Coast rap talent. According to the series synopsis, she believes the genre has the potential to reshape American culture. She works to assemble a team of musicians and pursues a volatile local rapper named Artillery, played by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, who is already facing legal troubles. Her cousin Lamar, portrayed by Asante Blackk, collaborates with her on musical production. Wanda also pursues an internship with Darryl Grant, a former drug dealer turned label owner, creating additional complications in her relationships.

Leon Simmons, played by Isaiah John, takes a different path by attempting to leave street life behind and establish a free legal clinic to make amends for his past. The series explores tensions that emerge as Wanda and Leon pursue separate goals, with Leon concerned about Wanda’s involvement in the music industry given its connection to street politics. The cast includes Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, and others, with Quincy Chad reprising his Snowfall role as Big Leon.

Malcolm Spellman executive produces the series from FX Productions alongside returning Snowfall executive producers Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson, and Paul Garnes. The show is set to premiere Sept. 8 on both FX and Hulu.
