Men with cardiovascular disease also demonstrated increased mortality risk from gastric, oesophageal, and lung cancers relative to those without the condition.
Researchers attributed the elevated cancer risk to overlapping behavioral and biological factors between the two diseases. Smoking, obesity, and excessive alcohol consumption emerged as significant contributors to cancer development in men with heart disease, with the connection being strongest for lung and oesophageal cancers. Experts noted that additional investigation is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms underlying this relationship and to develop improved screening and prevention strategies for cardiac patients at risk of cancer development.
Health authorities emphasized that both cardiovascular disease and cancer share common preventable risk factors, and individuals concerned about their health outcomes can reduce risk through smoking cessation, weight management, and reduced alcohol consumption.
