Great Britain confronts a significant risk of gas supply disruptions during the 2030s unless the government implements substantial measures to protect the country’s energy infrastructure, according to an official evaluation released this week.
A recent consultation revealed that under a “high stress scenario,” domestic and commercial gas supplies could become critically depleted within the coming decade. Three-quarters of consultation respondents endorsed warnings from the National Energy System Operator regarding an “emerging risk to gas supply security,” particularly during extended cold weather periods. The assessment notes that most industry participants indicated they lack adequate incentives to prepare for low-probability but high-impact supply disruption events.
The government is exploring multiple support mechanisms, including direct financial assistance to gas storage facility owners and pipeline operators to fund infrastructure upgrades and maintenance. Energy Minister Michael Shanks characterized such government intervention as “unprecedented” and stressed the decision would not be made without careful consideration. He emphasized that while the UK continues transitioning away from fossil fuels through expanded clean energy development, the gas system will remain essential to the energy infrastructure for decades ahead.
Currently, gas accounts for over one-third of the nation’s energy consumption. Domestic North Sea production has declined for 25 years and is anticipated to fall approximately 5% annually going forward. The UK historically sourced nearly half its gas from North Sea fields and roughly one-third from Norway, with additional supplies from US and Middle East liquefied natural gas imports and smaller volumes from continental European pipelines.
The government’s renewed focus on gas supply security comes as officials prepare decisions on two contested North Sea drilling proposals at Rosebank and Jackdaw. The prime minister has indicated a pragmatic approach to future North Sea oil and gas development, acknowledging available resources amid economic considerations.
