The consultation revealed that most respondents believed the industry would not adequately prepare for unlikely but severe supply disruptions on its own.
Approximately three-quarters of respondents supported concerns previously raised by the National Energy System Operator regarding emerging risks to gas supply security, particularly during extended periods of cold weather by 2030. The assessment indicated that supply challenges could be compounded if they coincide with low European storage levels or unexpected failures at import terminals or pipelines.
The UK currently relies on gas for more than a third of its total energy consumption. While domestic demand is projected to decline significantly by 2050 according to Climate Change Committee guidance, North Sea production is expected to fall faster due to 25 years of continuous decline in output. Currently, North Sea fields supply nearly half of UK gas consumption, with Norway providing just over a third, and additional imports arriving via tanker from the US and Middle East, plus smaller quantities through continental European pipelines.
Shanks emphasized that gas will remain important during the transition to clean energy sources, stating the government is committed to maintaining secure supplies while providing sector certainty for continued investment in Britain’s energy infrastructure.
