The Phoenix area experienced two significant dust storms within a three-day period this week, with meteorologists characterizing both as among the most severe to impact the region in recent years.
The storms, known as haboobs, form when strong downdrafts from thunderstorms lift loose dust and dirt that subsequently get propelled ahead of the storm system. These weather phenomena can generate substantial walls of dust and debris capable of reducing visibility and causing health concerns. The first storm occurred earlier in the week, followed by a second one during early morning hours on Thursday. Both events reduced visibility to approximately half a mile, though no significant impacts were reported, partly because the storms occurred during nighttime hours when road traffic was lighter.
According to researchers at Arizona State University, which helped develop a severity classification system, both storms registered as Category 5 events—the highest rating on the scale. The storms exhibited extreme characteristics, including high concentrations of dust and wind speeds around 50 miles per hour. The classification scale was introduced this year and uses data extending back to 2010.
Randall Cerveny, a professor at Arizona State’s School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, stated that having two Category 5 dust storms occur only a few days apart represents unprecedented activity within their records. Over the past 16 years, only four other dust storms had reached Category 5 severity prior to this week’s events.
Cerveny attributed the intensity partly to unusually dry conditions in the Phoenix region, which can increase the amount of dust available for storms to suspend. Climate scientists have suggested that human-caused climate change may increase the frequency of both severe drought conditions and intense thunderstorms, potentially creating more favorable conditions for severe dust storms going forward.
