Versant Media Group boosted its financial outlook for the year, citing accelerating performance across its digital business segments. The company now projects total revenue between $6.2 billion and $6.45 billion, along with adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $1.9 billion to $2.05 billion.
The guidance increase came after the company reported second-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street expectations on both revenue and earnings metrics. This represented the third earnings report since Versant’s separation from Comcast’s NBCUniversal at the beginning of the year. The company, which operates television networks including CNBC, MS NOW and The Golf Channel, began trading as an independent public entity in January. Shares closed up more than 6% following the announcement.
During the second quarter ended June 30, Versant’s platforms segment—encompassing Fandango and GolfNow—generated revenue of $225 million, representing growth of 0.8% for the quarter. Excluding the impact of the company’s divestiture of SportsEngine, platforms revenue increased 9.3%. The company attributed this performance to higher transaction volumes at Fandango and stronger subscription and booking activity at GolfNow. Overall company revenue declined 3.8% year over year to $1.64 billion, while linear television revenue fell 6.3% to $954 million due to subscriber declines.
Versant leadership has established a strategic objective to diversify its revenue base, targeting a mix where 50% of revenue comes from digital, platform, subscription and advertising-supported businesses, reducing reliance on traditional linear television, which currently accounts for more than 80% of revenue. The company continued executing this strategy through acquisitions, completing its purchase of golf simulation company Full Swing this week and previously acquiring StockStory, an artificial intelligence financial analysis platform, and other digital properties.
