'World-first' vaccine designed by artificial intelligence

Scientists at the University of Cambridge have developed what they characterize as a groundbreaking vaccine using artificial intelligence to design its key component, which was subsequently evaluated in human trials. According to the research team, this marks the first instance in which an antigen designed entirely by AI has been tested in people.

The vaccine was engineered to provide protection against a broad range of coronaviruses, including all Covid variants and animal viruses with pandemic potential. The approach differs from traditional vaccine development, which typically relies on current virus strains. Instead, researchers analyzed genetic sequences from multiple coronaviruses identified through surveillance programs and used AI to design what they call a “super-antigen” capable of training the immune system to recognize the entire coronavirus family, even accounting for mutations or new zoonotic spillover events.

Initial human trials involving 39 participants focused on safety assessment. A subsequent study with approximately 200 participants will provide additional data on immune system activation. According to findings published in the Journal of Infection, the vaccine demonstrated a “modest” impact on the immune system, though the results have generated interest within the scientific community.

The Cambridge team is extending this approach to other viral threats. Ongoing animal research is examining universal seasonal flu vaccines that would not require yearly reformulation and an H5N1 bird flu vaccine as a precautionary measure. The researchers are also investigating a vaccine for viral haemorrhagic fevers, including Ebola. Independent experts have characterized the technology as promising for pandemic preparedness, noting that AI’s ability to design vaccines for mutating viruses represents a significant advantage over conventional methods.
