Initial human trials involved 39 participants and assessed vaccine safety, with results published in the Journal of Infection. A second trial involving approximately 200 people will provide additional data on immune system response. Prof Saul Faust, who conducted some trials at the University of Southampton, described the AI design approach as having “definite potential” and noted the technology performs particularly well for pandemic-preparedness vaccines amid viral mutation.

The research team is expanding efforts to develop additional vaccines using this technology, including universal seasonal flu vaccines requiring no annual adaptation and protections against H5N1 bird flu and viral haemorrhagic fevers including Ebola. External experts have praised the approach as potentially transformative for vaccine development, with Prof Andy Pollard from Oxford noting that AI could accelerate development timelines and enhance predictions of immune response, ultimately saving lives. Government officials have characterized the work as advancing British scientific capabilities in vaccine innovation.
