World's biggest chipmaker TSMC's sales surge 45% amid buoyant AI demand

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s largest chip manufacturer, disclosed significant revenue growth for July amid strong demand for artificial intelligence-related semiconductors. The company posted revenue of 467.58 billion new Taiwan dollars ($14.5 billion) for the month, marking a 44.7% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

The revenue performance exceeded the company’s annual guidance trajectory, with TSMC projecting 40% revenue growth for the full year in U.S. dollar terms. According to Ben Barringer, head of technology research at Quilter Cheviot, the July results positioned the company ahead of its guidance targets and reduced pressure on subsequent months. Barringer cautioned, however, that semiconductor demand can shift rapidly and monthly figures may fluctuate, despite the company’s ongoing expansion initiatives.

TSMC’s financial strength reflects sustained investment in AI infrastructure across the technology sector. The company manufactures semiconductors for major customers including Nvidia and Google’s custom chip division, making its sales figures a closely monitored indicator of broader tech industry demand. During second-quarter earnings reported the previous month, high-performance computing—the category where AI chip sales are recorded—represented 66% of total revenues.

Chairman C.C. Wei characterized AI-related demand as “extremely robust” during the company’s earnings report. TSMC also raised its capital expenditure projection to between $60 billion and $64 billion for the year, signaling confidence in continued demand. Meanwhile, other semiconductor stocks gained on the news, with European chipmakers including ASML rising more than 2%. The broader PHLX Semiconductor index, down approximately 15% from its June peak due to market concerns about AI capital spending, remained approximately 72% higher for the year. TSMC shares rose 50% for the year.
