Xbox boss 'thinking about affordability' of next-gen console

Xbox leadership is factoring cost considerations into plans for the company’s next-generation console, codenamed Project Helix. Chief executive Asha Sharma told the BBC that the gaming industry faces unprecedented pressure to balance performance with affordability, citing what she described as a “crisis” in hardware component pricing.

The price increases stem partly from competition for computing components, particularly RAM, as artificial intelligence companies acquire substantial quantities for data center operations. Sharma noted the industry is experiencing what she called “Rampocalypse,” requiring manufacturers to innovate around efficiency and cost rather than simply pursuing performance improvements as in previous generations. She indicated Xbox must reconsider design approaches to storage, memory usage, and component selection for the upcoming console release.

Separately, Xbox announced a program allowing players to obtain digital versions of approximately 1,000 titles that currently exist only as physical media. Players can access the feature by inserting supported discs into their console, with digital rights transferable if the original disc is sold second-hand. The initiative addresses ongoing industry debate about physical versus digital distribution, particularly following Sony’s announcement that new PlayStation games will discontinue disc releases beginning January 2028.

Sharma declined to confirm whether Project Helix will include a disc drive. She emphasized that backwards compatibility will continue across future hardware generations, allowing players to access older games on new systems. The executive has led Xbox for six months following a transition from Microsoft’s artificial intelligence division and has overseen significant organizational changes aimed at addressing years of underperformance in the gaming division.
