Cost emerged as the primary barrier to ownership across all countries, cited by 51-75% of non-owners, while climate concerns ranked as a secondary consideration.
Despite recent polarization of the issue in European political discourse, respondents expressed predominantly positive or neutral attitudes toward air conditioning. Few believed that increased AC adoption would weaken climate commitment. Among those already owning air conditioning, 79-85% reported maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures during recent heatwaves, compared with only 35-47% of non-owners. However, some AC owners reported inability to use systems fully due to operating costs. Notably, respondents also indicated openness to alternative cooling solutions including improved insulation, external shutters, and reflective roofing.
