Amazon is developing a smart glasses program for its delivery drivers that will continuously photograph their surroundings throughout their work shifts. According to Bloomberg, the glasses could capture several thousand images during a typical driver’s shift, with the resulting data intended for upload to Amazon’s AI Wellspring platform.
The company’s representatives stated that the primary purpose of this image collection is to enhance delivery operations, while denying that the initiative constitutes a surveillance program. However, Amazon has not yet considered whether customers will have the ability to decline participation in this image-capture system. The company indicated it plans to implement automated blurring of people’s faces and vehicle license plates before images are reviewed by human personnel.
While Amazon confirmed that law enforcement could obtain stored images with a warrant, the company declined to disclose retention timelines for the photographs. Additionally, customers will have no access to images captured of their property or themselves, and no mechanism will exist for requesting deletion of such photos. The glasses represent an expansion of Amazon’s existing surveillance infrastructure, as drivers already operate vehicles equipped with AI-enabled cameras that monitor their behavior—a system that has generated complaints from employees regarding false alerts and data breaches.
Amazon is currently testing the smart glasses in a pilot program, during which drivers have completed over 275,000 deliveries while wearing them. The company has announced plans to deploy an additional 20,000 pairs of the glasses by the end of 2027, indicating a significant expansion of the program.
