American Airlines announces Trump Accounts matching program

American Airlines has become the latest employer to establish a matching contribution program for Trump Accounts, according to a statement released Monday. The airline will provide a one-time $1,000 match for each eligible employee’s child, supplementing the federal seed contribution of $1,000 available through the government program.

Trump Accounts, officially designated as 530A accounts, are tax-deferred savings vehicles available to U.S. children under age 18. Eligible children born between 2025 and 2028 whose parents or guardians establish accounts receive the $1,000 initial Treasury deposit. After account establishment, family members may contribute up to $5,000 annually until the beneficiary turns 18. Currently, approximately 1.4 million children have enrolled in the accounts and received the federal seed funding.

The airline’s initiative represents part of a broader corporate response to the program. More than 50 companies have committed to contributing to Trump Accounts for their workforce, with financial institutions including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley offering to fully match the government’s $1,000 seed contribution. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised the corporate participation, characterizing it as support from leading American companies.

American Airlines plans to expand its program next year by offering pretax payroll deduction options for employee contributions. Beginning in 2027, eligible employees will be able to direct up to $2,500 in pretax earnings annually toward their dependent children’s Trump Accounts. The airline indicated that roughly one-third of its approximately 140,000 global employees will have access to this pretax contribution feature. The pretax contribution option availability is contingent on finalization of Treasury Department regulations governing the arrangement.

CEO Robert Isom emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting employees’ financial planning for their families through the initiative.
