American Airlines on Wednesday introduced its first reconfigured Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, marking a significant step in the carrier’s strategy to expand premium offerings on long-haul international services. The wide-body jet features a redesigned interior that prioritizes high-revenue premium cabins, reflecting the airline’s shift away from traditional first-class configurations.
The new layout allocates 144 seats to premium categories, with the Flagship Suite section at the aircraft’s front containing 70 lie-flat seats equipped with sliding doors for privacy. The premium cabin design is intended to capture higher-yield revenue, with lie-flat seats commanding fares approaching $10,000 on select international routes, substantially more than standard economy fares. Additional premium offerings include 44 Premium Economy seats featuring privacy headrest wings and adjustable calf and footrests, along with 30 Main Cabin Extra seats. The remaining capacity consists of 186 standard Main Cabin seats.
The retrofit represents the culmination of planning initiated in 2022, when the carrier announced its intention to eliminate traditional international first class on many aircraft. After experiencing delays from suppliers, American began operating the Flagship Suite configuration last year. The company plans to complete retrofitting its entire fleet of 20 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft by next year, with similar but smaller premium configurations planned for its Airbus A321XLR aircraft.
The initiative places American Airlines among carriers prioritizing premium travel segments. Competitors Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have established earlier presences in this market segment. Beyond fleet modernization, American continues pursuing multiple growth strategies, including loyalty program enhancement, on-time performance improvements, and network expansion. Last week, the airline announced seven additional international routes for its 2027 schedule, though these additions are not currently planned for the Boeing 777-300ER fleet.
