Apple’s distinction lies in embedding authentication capabilities directly into camera hardware rather than relying solely on post-production labeling systems.
The company is providing developers with access to a Reference Image API that will be available across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS platforms. This infrastructure could eventually enable third-party applications to support inspection and verification of these digitally signed photographs. However, Apple has indicated that the Reference Image feature will not be available at launch in the European Union, though users in that region will retain the ability to develop and view reference images through iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.
