The initial Trivy breach resulted in the theft of terabytes of credentials and sensitive data.
Shai-Hulud employed an innovative command-and-control infrastructure using Internet Computer Protocol-based canisters, a form of smart contract that enabled rapid URL changes to prevent takedowns. Infected machines communicated with the canister at regular intervals. Security researchers noted that the group exhibited less operational discipline than typically expected from hackers of comparable sophistication, with some analysts attributing this partly to advanced tools that have lowered barriers to entry in the hacking community.
If convicted, one defendant faces potential imprisonment exceeding 20 years, while the other faces more than 10 years, according to Australian authorities.
